Goodman Recently, I decided to enlarge my sales and marketing efforts through outsourcing, so I contacted a number of service bureaus about promoting my successful line of customer service and sales training videos. I have found very few organizations that are willing to truly satisfy my needs by working on a pay-for-performance basis. Everyone else insists on being paid, on the clock, for their time and for administration. It reminds me of my former college students who claimed they deserved a better grade on an assignment because they tried so hard! They wanted to be rewarded for mere effort. I had to tell them that effort is admirable, but to be fair, I can only see and measure results. Granted, it sounds a little rigid, but it is a real world lesson. Sooner or later, each of us has to earn his way by performing, by achieving. A salary or a steady retainer of some sort may seem comforting and assuring, but in truth, the tightrope were walking on in business isnt supported by anything other than actual accomplishments on behalf of our employers and customers. Ive personally sold and performed a number of consulting and training contracts where I guaranteed satisfaction. Almost without exception, these engagements are among my most lucrative. This has to be shocking to the outsource companies that I contacted about my project. But it wouldnt come as a surprise to author and sports agent Mark McCormack, who suggests we offer what has to be the most radical sort of guarantee imaginable: being willing to work for nothing, or in exchange for the value a client chooses to pay us at the end of a transaction or engagement. Heres how McCormack proposes the idea: I have always contended that a great way for young people to land the ideal job is to work for nothing. If they have something to offer, theyll get on the payroll soon enough. The same approach works wonders when youre selling your companys services. Suppose you feel very confident that you can do a good job for somebody and you have clearly established a benchmark amount for a particular servicesay a $10,000 monthly fee. It can often be to your advantage to tell a potential customer, Look, Im so confident that this will work out well, that Ill work on the project for six months and then, after the fact, you can pay us anything you wish, including nothing, if thats what you think its worth. “This is a bold statement, but not a rash one. If youre providing a first-rate service and if youre dealing with an honorable person, I think your exposure is minimal. McCormack goes on to say that nobody has ever stiffed him, yet one client did pay a surprisingly and undeservedly low fee at the end of a successful project. Otherwise, the idea has worked like a charm. You dont have to be as radical as McCormack to benefit from offering meaningful guarantees. In fact, you can be generous, yet sensible, if you craft one with care. Taking McCormacks example, you dont have to work for nothing for a full six months before seeing a payday. You can break down that time into weekly or monthly deliverables, and when the client sees that they are being fulfilled, checks are periodically released to you in acknowledgement of your actual accomplishments. Of course, if theres a disagreement, you can suspend further performance until understanding is achieved. Your out-of-pocket, so to speak, will be limited to the time you have invested to that date. Here is the key: Your guarantee, to be sensible, needs to be a performance promise, and not a vague satisfaction promise. Heres the difference. When you promise to perform, you are saying that youll achieve specific, objective, clearly measurable results, in a certain quantity, at a given quality, by or before a certain date. For example, I might say to a client that I will train their service and tech support people to shorten calls by 25% or more. This will result in a certain dollar savings to the client, from which my firm will be paid. Within 30-90 days of a projects inception, well measure progress. If we arent on track, the client can cancel the project. There is some boilerplate that says that the client, during our work together, will do what it can, in good faith, to help me to pursue that objective, and not to introduce call-lengthening procedures that will conflict with this objective. Its a guarantee I can live with. Im saying I can do this, and I will, and it will save you thousands or millions of dollars, if you help me to do it for you. I am NOT saying, I will please you, even if you elect to act irrationally or in bad faith. In other words, if Im performing, I must be paid. There is no right, bestowed by my guarantee, enabling a client to not pay, simply because he doesnt want to, or because he wants to have his cake and to eat it, too. He cant act on whim, or on impulse. If companies are genuinely interested in achieving customer satisfaction, they need to create true alignment. This means tying their success to the success of their customers. And if you want a better job or a great opportunity, try working for nothing! Dr. Gary S. They will give those suggestions power, like the pebble that makes its presence felt on the shore. Selling your product or service involves introducing new ideas, more often than not. How do you enter an existing trance, & turn it into a new one? Frequently, your research will tell you that there is an ideological hurdle that you must clear in order to make the sale. Belief Is All-Powerful! To enter the buyers trance, begin your sales message by demonstrating where your position agrees with their accepted beliefs. As you move forward, make a logical connection between that which is accepted, & another conclusion that is a step closer to the new conclusion you wish to promote. This act of mental agreement creates momentum. For example, if your target market believes that Guaranteed Investment Certificates are the best way to invest their money, they are unlikely to listen to you if you boldly proclaim the superiority of Mutual Funds. But would they give you some attention if you began with, Would you be interested in more of the kind of money growth youve enjoyed through Guaranteed Investment Certificates? And then, If there were a low risk strategy for using GICs, together with Mutual Funds to increase your returns by 53% or more, would you want to find out about it? And then, Give me just 15 minutes, & Ill show you the failsafe secret to an earlier retirement! By establishing empathy in your sales message, you enter the trance. Each successive point or question should do three things. 1) Echo accepted belief. 2) Introduce a new element that when logically combined with the previous conclusion, creates a new hypothesis. 3) Raise the level of commitment to the new idea. Begin pursuing a small yes response, & gradually grow that agreement into a big YES response. Use questions, statements, & logic that get your prospects responding in the affirmative! Why Does This Work? To be human, is to have unlimited freedom of choice. We are able to consciously decide our response to every stimulus. This is our god given gift. However, we forget this. Instead, we are a bundle of conditioned responses. We hypnotize ourselves into believing that external circumstances give rise to our thoughts. For instance, if I were to say to you that you are stupid, you would probably become angry, & think I was a jerk for saying so. That is a choice you make. You could just as easily make a choice to ignore my remark. You could make any choice you wish. You could even decide to think that I am a jealous fool, & feel sorry for me. The choice is all yours. On the other hand, if I were to say to you that you are brilliant, you would no doubt feel pleased with yourself. Again, this is a choice. You could just as easily decide to pay no attention to my opinion. But you forget you are making a choice, and you automatically become angry or flattered, depending on the stimulus. You are in a trance of your own making. To be human, is to be full of such conditioning. When we see a logical conclusion that incorporates our own accepted beliefs, we are conditioned to accept another one, & then another. Until without even realizing it, we have accepted a new belief that we would not have accepted, had it been forced on us in the first place. Such is the judo of persuasion. By Ronald Edwards Today many unscrupulous firms are offering corporations and bank accounts in many different jurisdictions with a shopping list of countries available almost every one of them no longer any good, many being located on Caribbean islands and are misleading the customers into thinking they are real offshore jurisdictions with privacy benefits. Wrong!!! Let’s analyze some things to look for when shopping for an offshore jurisdiction. Bank Secrecy Without this we are not interested. We want the bank to not be able to divulge any information about the bank account including whether or not such a bank account even exists unless there is an order from a competent court in the country where the bank is located. More secrecy than this does not exist any place today. Numbered accounts are gone. Sparbuch accounts in Austria are all gone, yes I know people offer them for sale on websites but they are all long gone and closed down. The bank secrecy laws must be written into the law of the land in question. Belize has no such bank secrecy laws written in their laws, people just seem to trust them even though there would be no legal penalty for them to reveal bank information if they see fit to do so. We want bank secrecy laws to call for prison and civil penalties for any violations in addition to allow for one to bring suit against the bank for violations. Panama meets this test. MLAT Mutual Legal Assistance treaty. Many nations have entered into these agreements. For a list of countries that have entered into these agreements with the USA courtesy of the US Government . It is shocking as to how many countries are in such agreements. Even Panama is in such an agreement but it is fairly limited in scope, see below: Essentially Panama will cooperate in a multi-national case involving narcotics and money laundering (these crimes need to be tied to narcotics). They also will get involved in cases concerning child pornography and real terrorism. If you are not a narcotics dealer and are not a money launderer (money launders are typically dealing with many millions of dollars), not a child pornographer, and not a terrorist you should not be concerned by this. The MLAT requires that there first need to a criminal prosecution case on file in the criminal courts of the requesting government (which means no fishing expeditions) then through diplomatic channels involving the embassies, requests are made for information, then reviewed by Panama officials and a decision on compliance is made or requests for more information are made so a determination can be arrived at. These cases can take months and even years for completion. At times the country where the bank is located has been known to once alerted to the problem, conduct their own investigation first and this usually requires them to seize the relevant records and documents which can stall the process for a long time even years since their justice systems typically moves quite slow and statues of limitation can run out, please don’t construe this to mean Panama does this routinely it is just something that does occur from time to time around the world. The MLAT has no application to civil cases such as divorce, bankruptcy, civil judgments, business litigation, any sort of civil litigation, civil tax matters etc. Taxation matters of any sort are not covered by this as far as Panama is concerned. Income tax evasion is a civil (non-criminal) offense in Panama. Switzerland cooperates on income tax cases if the return is filed falsely like all income was not declared, things were omitted or so the complaining government says. Let me explain. These island jurisdictions usually have different classes of bank licenses one class allows the bank to do business with only residents of the country, the other class usually encountered is the offshore license that allows the bank to ONLY conduct business with non-residents of the country, and they usually have a third class of license that allows the bank to do business with both residents and non-residents. It is a natural conclusion that a bank with an offshore only license is a risky proposition at best since the government won’t let them do business with the citizens of their country. The banks we use in Panama are open to the citizens of Panama and are never offshore only banks. Most of the bank accounts being offered by various web site businesses are with bank having only an offshore license. Corporation Privacy This is an important point. I see many websites selling offshore corporations from dozens of countries. The only kind of corporation worth anything when it comes to privacy is a bearer share corporation. By this what is meant is the ownership of the corporation rests with the person who has the physical stock certificates of the corporation. Ownership need not be reported or recorded anywhere. A sale of the corporation does not need to be reported. This is what is called a non-transparent corporation and is extremely disliked by many governments who think people have no rights to privacy. In Panama a S.A. Corporation or bearer share company has no ownership reporting or recording requirements. One merely hires professional directors (which we provide) who appear as directors on hundreds of corporations and that is that. Directors are made public but you need not be your own director, we provide professional nominee directors complete with resignation letters and general power of attorney letter. Corporation privacy is especially important since governments have taken to monitoring bank wire transfers including recently the Swift System scandal showing the USA was monitoring Swift Transfers and we do not know to what extent and for exactly how long but is best to assume the worst. If one uses an anonymous bearer share Panama Corporation there is lack of transparency in that no one knows the ownership behind the corporation, they only know the corporation received or sent a wire and the other side of the transaction. This serves to preserve your privacy to a large extent. Imagine how silly it is to use an offshore corporation where ownership is made public and can be computerized thus one could tell in seconds who is the person behind the corporation receiving or sending the funds. This is what is being sold all over the internet as an offshore corporation misleading the people into thinking their privacy is being protected. Once again Panama passes the test. Taxation Free The offshore jurisdiction must be taxation free in that offshore derived income is not taxed by the country where the corporation is domiciled. Panama meets this test as does numerous other countries. Panama also has no capital gains tax for you stock market investors and there is no inheritance or probate tax. Panama passes this test. Weather Considerations Many of these offshore jurisdictions are located on islands and are subject to power outages from hurricanes. Also one must look for risk from volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes. Just what you don’t need is a power outage from a storm preventing you from getting your money out when you need it. The reason the Panama Canal was built where it is, is because there is no risk from hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanoes and earthquakes. Panama passes the test. Infrastructure One must look at the power generators, telephone system and internet when evaluating an offshore jurisdiction. You don’t want to have to wait days or weeks to be able to use your online banking or to be able to talk to your bank on the phone. Panama was basically built by the Americans who just left it in 2000. It has American style phones, electricity, roads, etc. The cells phones and internet in Panama are as good as Canada or USA. Panama passes the test again. Government Stability The last thing you need is to be banking in some tax haven offshore jurisdiction and find out a revolution has taken place and you can kiss your money goodbye. Another possibility is like what happened in Grenada when there was rampant bank fraud causing the closure and liquidation of the offshore banks with people losing their savings. Panama is a stable democracy. Panama is a UN neutral country so a war is most unlikely. Panama is in a treaty with the USA concerning the Panama Canal which was given to them by the USA in 2000. If the canal is threatened the USA has the right to step in to protect the Panama Canal. This means that if there was a revolution (unlikely occurrence since Panama is a most stable democracy) the USA would have fighter jets there within an hour or two and by the next day one could expect to see a navy aircraft carrier group in Panama Bay with an expeditionary force of marines. Next would be an airlift, paratroopers, helicopters, nuclear submarines and you have the idea. Forget about an invasion, attack or revolution in Panama, it passes the test. Currency Panama uses the US dollar as its currency. The banks are on the US dollar and the ATM machines dispense US dollars, they even use US coins. This means a stable currency. I know some of you will say they like the Euro better fine but when I say stable compare it to the Bahamian Dollar or Grand Cayman Dollar. No currency conversion costs in Panama if you use dollars. Panama again passes the test. EU Ties Panama has no ties that could erode privacy again passing the test. No reportage of income for EU residents or collecting of withholding taxes. Tax identity numbers from your home country are not required to open a Panama bank account, own a corporation, buy real estate etc. Panama again passes the test. Suddenly, all the love songs at the radio seemed to have been written for you. You want to stay in bed. Shut all the doors and the windows. Bring the kids to your relatives for a while. You dont feel like talking to anybody now. You swear to yourself that you will never get involved with someone again, half believing it. Life is much more exciting than that. Besides, you are not the last and only person experiencing a separation. And, it might not be your last breakup either. With the proper mental tools, break ups could be less painful. Breaking up, I prefer to call it an opportunity for a change of habits. Its like having an addiction and you need to cut yourself from it. Its painful but necessary. The good news about it is that it doesnt need to be Hell on Earth. There are effective ways to go through this process with smooth sailing. First, you absolutely need to stop thinking of the great moments that you had together. Chances are that those moments happened a long time ago, not to mention, not that often either. Keep in mind the reasons of your break up, until your mind is in sync with your heart. And dont keep in touch with that person for now, if you can. Or reduce the frequency of contacts at its bare minimum. Write a letter You need to let the emotions out. Write everything that frustrates you, made you angry, sad, etc You dont necessarily need to send it to your previous partner but at least, this is a proven healing process for you to calm the storm inside. You can choose to keep it somewhere to read for yourself later, when the healing process will be over. You might discover some strength that you are not aware about you. Make new friends. You need to socialize more the ever. How do you do that? Go to fairs, reading clubs, sports clubs, art clubs, etc ask questions, make conversations, and exchange phone numbers with people to do activities and keep in touch. Offer to help with something. Friends come fast like that. Dont jump into another relationship to avoid facing your feelings of emptiness. Chances are that there will be other disappointments. You need to finish the process of unblocking all of your emotions to freely open your heart again to someone else, and increase the chances of success. Pamper yourself. Treat yourself. Take naps in the Sun. Get a pedicure. A great massage. Read the bible. Read inspiring texts that will give you strength ( Like the book Chicken soup for Soul). Go jogging. Do someYoga. Listen to Jazz music. Eat well. Go pick apples with the kids. You know what I mean; do all the activities that help put your soul to calm. Stay away from unsupportive people Neutralized your mind and heart from some comments of your family and friends. I am sure that they really want your good. But they maybe are a little bit . clumsy in the way they express their caring for you When are you going the get married? You cant go from people to people like that! You are getting old, you know? or There are other people you know; 1 lost, 10 found! (I hate that one). Hang out with people who are taking your mind off things, who understands and gives you the support that you need. I remember reading this about hardships that It is not only time that heals the heart, but also all the warmth and love around us. Get a Pet When I broke up with my last boyfriend, I got a cat. He was so tiny and requested so much of my attention that it fulfilled my need to feel wanted. A pet doesnt replace the love and attention that a boyfriend or girlfriend can give, but, its all part of the process of having a full life. So get a dog, a cat, a turtle, whatever provides that added value in your life. Find at least 3 Passions You will need to get all the strength that you can possibly have to open your heart to fun. Fill your life to the fullest with different passions. Take cooking lessons, join travel single groups to Hawaii resorts, try other sports, and try painting, other arts, and hobbies of some kind. Well, it is hard in the reality of life to get anything made of lines that small, so for a wood turner, three simple lines are all it takes to make the myriad of shapes that come off a lathe. The cuts that are made are just a straight cut, a convex curve and a concave curve. These can used in a variety of ways to make almost anything that can be thought of for a lathe. Consider a table leg. It is generally made up of a square upper section, several beads and coves, a few decorative v-cuts and a curved foot. The transition from pommel or square to the bead happens with a convex curve and then two more side by side but in opposite directions, the right side of the bead and then the left. Those decorative coves that lend a sense of lightness to the leg are a couple of concave cuts, one to the left and another to the right, meeting in the middle. Many legs demonstrate a long “s” curve somewhere along their length. This is, from the top down, a concave cut right, a concave cut left, a convex right left and a convex right. The only thing separating it from a bead and cove is its length. Flats are just a straight line and v cuts are simply two flats that meet at the bottom. All other cuts can now be seen to be mixtures of the three. Why, even a bowl can be seen to be a combination of an inside curve and and outside curve, then a flat along the bottom or perhaps another concave surface with a bead on the edge to give a rim to sit on. So a turner needs to refine and practice those three cuts so as to have mastery in their execution. They will be needed over and over. The tools most used for the cuts are a skew for flats and convex cuts, and gouges for concave cuts. On the other hand gouges may be used for the former cuts as well as the latter. A skew chisel can be used for long cove or concave cuts but a gouge is generally deemed appropriate as it is used for those finer coves especially, where it is difficult to bring the skew to bear. The challenge for the wood turner thus becomes two fold. First a design has to made using only the three elements and that design has to be clean and proportionate and, one would hope, unique. Then those elements need to become second nature in execution so as to leave a surface ready for limited sanding and a fine finish.
